Try looking in your nearest charity shop, car boot or on the stalls of a nearby flea-market. People are always throwing away items that are precious to someone else. Granted sometimes the qualities not brilliant BUT sometimes you might just come across a little treasure

When moving into a new house, make notes about vague colour scheme ideas or particular items that you're trying to find. I am a huge fan of indian patterns and floral pretty things. I also look out for music LPs and old posters for Sam. When people come to your home they will think you've spent a fortune but you and I know it only cost 50p ;)

I know some people in the younger generation think it's "uncool" or "cheap" but if you don't want people to know about your finds of a century that's fine just tell them the shop that they originally came from or make one up. You shouldn't feel bad for buying from a charity shop as the money they need keeps research and treatment for cancer going, helps children and people find shelter, allows hospices to give top of the range medicines and care - so why wouldn't you feel proud you contributed to that? And flea-market stalls or carboots, people have paid to put up their stall so they can get rid of their stuff, I've sold stuff in the past and it's better to sell as much as you can than take it all home again the next day - you're doing them a favour and they'll love you for it!

I'm not saying you should buy absolutely everything second hand, I have a mixture of both new and second hand but it's good to bare in mind that whatever was once new will turn up second hand cheaper. Zara women's clothes is a great example: now I live in Liverpool, they pop up all the time and for a fraction of the cost. You have to have good eyes when you're looking around and know what you're really looking for and interested in. Don't just buy any old tat that's going to junk up your home.

"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."
